Our Impact

Together, we will create a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

Habitat for Humanity of McHenry County (HFHMC) was founded in January 1994 with the mission of “uniting the community with people in need to provide the life-changing opportunity to purchase and own quality, affordable homes.”

In its first 18 months, while building the systems of governance and operations for the new nonprofit organization, the volunteer-driven effort constructed three homes. By the time of our 30th anniversary in 2024, HFHMC will have served more than 300 families in McHenry County!

Since 1994, Habitat McHenry has provided affordable housing services to 1 of every 250 eligible households and has taken a total of 35 derelict homes from neighborhoods across McHenry County; rehabilitating and returning them to the tax rolls while creating affordable housing opportunities for low income residents.

While Habitat McHenry County has professionalized its operations through hiring staff, harnessing the energy of volunteers remains at our core. During our nearly 30-year history, HFHMC has leveraged an estimated 500,000 hours of volunteer labor in support of the mission. Resulting in the mobilization of more than $5,000,000 of volunteer labor in partnerships with families of assistance in their dream of homeownership.
