Programs
Building Program
HFHMC works in partnership with people in need to build modest and affordable houses in McHenry County. The houses are sold at no profit and with no interest. Volunteers provide some of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to help build the houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor, called “sweat equity,” into the building of their homes and homes of other Habitat families. Mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.
A Brush with Kindness
This program is offered to low-income families in McHenry County who are struggling to maintain their houses.
Overview:
- Focuses on exterior home repair, such as painting, minor exterior repairs, and yard cleanup. Groups of 10-20 volunteers work alongside the homeowner to revitalize a home’s exterior. Team leaders make the experience of helping others a positive one.
- Uses volunteers and donated funds and materials, helping low-income homeowners continue to live independently and securely in their homes.
- Part of Habitat’s broader community development strategy, a holistic approach that assists communities as well as families. It revitalizes the appearance of the neighborhood, strengthens connections within the community, and most importantly, helps preserve affordable housing stock.

Mission Statement
The mission of Habitat for Humanity of McHenry County is to increase and preserve affordable housing in McHenry County for families in need, and to put the reality of substandard housing in the minds and hearts of McHenry County residents in such a powerful way that unattainable adequate shelter for these families becomes politically, socially, and religiously unacceptable.
